This question caused a lot of speculation on what size runway and catalogue models should be. The indefinite answer was slim.
John Galliano once used models of all shapes and sizes to grace his catwalk show and even though this was a very wise move, it didn’t show some of his clothes off to their full potential.
The most common answers to the statement were that models should be of a healthy size which would probably now be around a size 10-12. Not a skinny size 0 or a larger size 20+.
Lots of fashion magazines preach about how unhealthy models look today and how every magazine and runway uses skinny, lesser than the average models but then they go on to contradict themselves by using extremely slim models themselves.
Many students agreed that clothes do look better on tall, slim models.
“To agree with this statement would be to ignore a range of other factors. For example, the proportion of the individual can affect the appearance of clothing as opposed to the actual size. Scientists have discovered that the most attractive hip to waist ratio is 0.7. Therefore a figure could be seen as attractive regardless of its size as long as it complies with these proportions. Also, the statement is very vague and makes generalisations; the body type that clothing looks best on completely depends on the garment itself, different garment styles suit different figures, therefore it would be wrong to say that ALL clothing looks better on slim models.”
In conclusion to the message board statement, most people agrees that clothes do look better on tall, slim models but only if the model looks healthy and radiant and definitely not a skinny size 0.
